Bad Gastein's main skiing area is on the "sunny" western side of the valley. Access to the long intermediate slopes above the town is via the two stages of the Stubnerkogel gondola.
Before even starting out on the ski slopes there is an opportunity to get the adrenaline pumping as the top gondola station is also the location of the photogenic "hanging bridge". This stretches across a fairly wide gully behind the gondola building with views down to the Jungeralm area below.
The runs under the top gondola are fairly straightforward blue and red runs above the tree line. A juction to the left heads through to the top of the short Burgstall T-bar while there is a blue run stretching all the way back down to the town when open.
The other runs heading away from the top Stubnerkogel gondola station in either direction lead down to the Angertal side of the mountain. The red run to the right exiting the gondola building traverses the ridge before heading down and joining the Jungeralm area.
Along the ridge past the hanging bridge is the Sender red run which leads down to the full range of the Angetal runs:
- to the right to the base of the Burgstall drag lift or further on down a red run to the base at Ski Centre Angertal
- to the left and the base of the Jungeralm chairlift or further on down a red, blue or black run to the base at Ski Centre Angertal
The red runs in the valley off the Jungeralmbahn are one of the best aspects of this ski area and offer plenty of scope both on the run and in the areas between the marked slopes. (Please note that local information on conditions and safety aspects should be sought before attempting any off-piste routes.)
The Angertal base links either into the Bad Hofgastein ski area or accesses Bad Gastein again via the Senderbahn gondolas or the Angertal chairlift and the Burgstall drag lift.
similar ski resorts
It is difficult to compare Bad Gastein to any other resort because it is so different, with its grand old spa hotels and the setting on different levels of the valley, as well as the three different ski areas. Probably the closest would be:
Mayrhofen (for the variety of skiing available)
Kitzbühel (for the scope of skiing and the style of some resort hotels)
